To our mixed brothers and sisters (specifically those who identify as black and white)…

We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the fact that we, as mixed people, are experiencing unique challenges during this time.

We know you are trying to:

Fight the good fight and educate others.

Hold space for your anger and pain.

Navigate your own guilt and privilege.

While also trying to acknowledge how oppression and racism has directly affected you as a black person.

This duality and contradiction is something we, as mixed people, have had to reckon with unconsciously on a daily basis, and it’s now being heightened as we watch the world go through the same thing.

It’s incredibly complex to watch the world finally acknowledge something that’s been a fact in the mixed community.

America is trying to figure out how to hold both pain and progress in one place. How to facilitate the healing between the long held racial divide in this country.

And that’s something that mixed race individuals have to do daily.

In order for us to see ourselves as one whole being, we have had to tap in and bridge our own gap.

So, to see this occurring outside of us has been both a relief and a burden.

Both motivating and exhausting.

Both triggering and healing.

Please remember to take some space for yourself to sit with all that internal conflict.

Take time to reflect. Take time to rest.

We’ve been experiencing a racial war within our bodies’ DNA since birth.

Recognize that and have empathy for that.

This so resonates with me! I have been doing work on healing childhood wounds via a support group that recognizes the effects of growing up in dysfunctional homes. It’s taken me a long time to articulate and recognize that for me many of my childhood wounds stem from growing up in a dysfunctional society that prioritizes whiteness. I have lots more to say- sharing my story with you via email now!
