Mixed in America is a community organization looking to have more nuanced conversation about race in America, specifically through the multiracial lens. Our goal is to empower the mixed community by facilitating supportive spaces for mixed individuals to explore and unpack their identities. Mixed in America offers services for adults, children, affinity groups, schools, and businesses. Our approach is trauma informed, holistic, inclusive and autonomous.
Mixed in America was founded in 2018 by Jazmine Jarvis and Meagan Smith. Since then, Mixed in America has supported and worked with thousands of mixed race individuals across the United States, Canada and Europe. Meagan and Jazmine have held 60+ programs and facilitated numerous healing spaces for schools and businesses such as Google, Northwestern University, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences, Biola University, Highline Public Schools and more.
Historically, the mixed race existence has been erased within society. Multiracial people are often pressured to categorize themselves as only one of their multiple races. This denies mixed people their full expression, limiting them to identifying as only a fraction of themselves. Mixed individuals often face similar racial traumas as their monoracial counterparts but lack the community and support to process it. The ways in which mental health affects the mixed community has yet to be properly researched and understood. We assume the mixed experience rather than asking mixed people themselves what it’s like to exist in a multiracial body. This journey is unique and filled with nuance. Embracing duality is not easy. The resulting wounds are oftentimes invalidated, misunderstood, and ignored, leaving us with very few resources to assist in authentic healing. Mixed in America aims to provide these resources and facilitate spaces to remedy these complex challenges.
The Co-founders, Meagan Smith and Jazmine Jarvis are mixed identity specialists who are dedicated to educating, healing and empowering the mixed community. Some of the ways they do this is by facilitating trauma-informed workshops, programs, events, seminars, lectures, online courses, and coaching services for the mixed race community.
